Welcome to Fanwood, a vibrant and historic activity centre nestled in the heart of Gomersal, West Yorkshire. Owned and operated by Spen Valley Scouts, Fanwood has been a cornerstone of outdoor adventure, learning, and community spirit for generations.
Our Location & Legacy
Fanwood is located on Ferrands Lane, BD19 4DA, surrounded by beautiful woodland and open countryside. But this tranquil site has a fascinating past; it was once home to the Cleckheaton Golf Club, which operated here from 1904 to 1922. Known as the Round Hill Course, it was designed by renowned golfer Alex Herd and offered a picturesque nine-hole layout before the club relocated to Chain Bar.
Following the golf club’s departure, the land transitioned into a haven for Scouting and Guiding. Today, Fanwood stands as a testament to the enduring value of outdoor education and youth development.
Our Facilities
Fanwood offers a wide range of facilities designed to support both traditional camping and modern training needs:
- The Frank Harris Training Centre (FHTC) – Opened in 1972 by Lord Baden Powell, grandson of Scouting’s founder
- Bunkhouse accommodation – Completed in 2003, ideal for pack holidays and residential stays
- Camping fields – Spacious and well-maintained for tents and outdoor activities
- Activity zones – including archery, low ropes, bouldering, and woodland trails
- Meeting and training rooms – Suitable for workshops, badge work, and leadership development
Our History
Scouting in the Spen Valley dates back to May 1914, serving communities across Cleckheaton, Gomersal, Scholes, Hightown, Liversedge, Birkenshaw, and Hunsworth. Fanwood has grown alongside this movement, evolving from a simple campsite into a fully equipped activity centre that supports thousands of young people each year.
Our Land & Stewardship
The land surrounding Fanwood has been carefully managed to preserve its natural character and heritage value. It forms part of a wider area once considered for residential development, but planning authorities and heritage bodies have recognised its importance as a green space. Measures such as tree planting, hedgerow retention, and sensitive landscaping ensure Fanwood remains a sanctuary for wildlife and outdoor learning.
Our Mission
At Fanwood, we believe in the power of the outdoors to inspire, educate, and empower. Whether you’re here for a weekend camp, a leadership course, or a day of adventure, our goal is to provide a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for all.
